The Getting to Zero Coalition is a powerful alliance of more than 200 organisations (including over 180 private companies) within the maritime, energy, infrastructure, and finance sectors. The Coalition is committed to getting commercially viable zero-emission vessels powered by zero-emission fuels into operation by 2030. Hitting this milestone is essential if we are to achieve maritime shipping’s moon-shot ambition of full decarbonisation by 2050.
The Getting to Zero Coalition was launched in 2019 with 70 signatories. Today, more than 200 companies, key governments, and intergovernmental organisations support the Coalition’s mission to make zero-emission fuels and vessels a scalable and affordable reality by 2030 in order to achieve shipping’s 2050 zero-emission target. The Coalition is managed by the Global Maritime Forum, which initially founded it together with the World Economic Forum and Friends of Ocean Action.
The Coalition’s strategy focuses on two key objectives: fostering progress around first-mover projects and preparing a full, just, and equitable transition at scale. These objectives are achieved through working groups targeting policy action and industry action, and activities like workshops, webinars, and knowledge pieces. Working groups include green corridor task forces, a book and claim task force, a policy action group, and a Latin America task force.
The Coalition has explored pathways toward full shipping decarbonisation and built a solid knowledge base. Members have already taken concrete action, solidifying through initiatives like green corridors. Advocacy through the Coalition has also played a key role in recent policy developments, including the International Maritime Organization’s decision to introduce much more ambitious targets, the European Union’s Fit for 55, and national frameworks for international shipping.
Over 180 maritime, energy, infrastructure, and finance companies are members of the Getting to Zero Coalition. The Coalition is also supported by more than 20 NGOs and intergovernmental organisations and more than ten knowledge partners. It is also endorsed by the governments of 14 countries. All members and supporters are committed to the Getting to Zero Coalition’s Ambition Statement. Membership in the Coalition’s “race to the top” for the future of our industry is by invitation only.
